Subscribing to Blogs

There are different ways to subscribe to blogs, keep track of new posts and be notified of new posts. Here’s an outline of some of your choices:

Internet Explorer:

When you first view a website, Internet Explorer will search for feeds. If feeds are available, the Feeds button will change color and a sound will play. See the image below:

You view feeds on the Feeds tab in the Favorites Center. To view your feeds, click the Favorites Center button, and then click Feeds .

You can receive content automatically by subscribing to a web feed. When you subscribe to a web feed, you set the interval at which Internet Explorer will check the website for updates. Once you’ve set an interval, Internet Explorer will automatically download the most up-to-date web feed list.

To subscribe to a feed in Internet Explorer

1. Go to the webpage that has the feed to which you want to subscribe. In the case for this website the address is http://kvitek.mariner.dcboces.org
2. Click the Feeds button to discover feeds on the webpage.
3. Click a feed (if more than one is available). If only one feed is available, you will go directly to that page.
4. Click the Subscribe to this Feed button, and then click Subscribe to this Feed.
5. Type a name for the feed and select the folder to create the feed in.
6. Click Subscribe.

To view your subscribed feeds, click the Favorites Center button, and then click Feeds. To automatically get updated content, right click on the Feed in the Feeds list in the Favorites Center. Then choose Properties - Settings.. Here is where you can change the interval that your feeds are updated. Also under Properties - Settings you can turn on play a sound when a feed is found on a webpage.

Bloglines:

First you will need to go to Bloglines and sign up for an account which is free. Click on register.

To subscribe to a feed using Bloglines go to this page. Here you can enter the URL of the blog you want to subscribe to. To subscribe to this blog you would enter http://kvitek.mariner.dcboces.org/.

To view your blogs you would go to BlogLines and enter your login and password and then click on the feeds tab on the left.

To perform a search to see new posts in a blog you can use the search box at the top right or click on the search tab. For more options for your search click on “More Search” over to the right.

You can also add a notifier to your computer. Bloglines provides notifiers that make it easy to be notified when your subscriptions have new items. If you use several computers, you can install a notifier on each machine, so you’ll always know when your subscriptions have new items to read. They provide notifiers for many different operating systems.

Technorati:

Technorati is another free site for tracking blogs. To join go to http://technorati.com/ and click on the Join tab at the top.

Then you can add blogs to your favorites by clicking on the favorites tab at the top.
